HOW TO - Add, Manage, Configure a new hard drive in FreeNAS (0.7.2 Sabanda)

We will be adding a single disk, not in a RAID.

1) Ensure that the new hard drive is plugged in to the machine and powered on.

2) In the FreeNAS web manager go to Disk > Management and Click the blue plus sign on the right.
Select your disk from the dropdown and fill out the rest of the information.
Apply changes.

3) Once you've added the drive you then need to format it. Disks > Format

Disk: Select the correct disk
File system: I stuck with UFS
Volume label: CMOUNT
Minimum free space: 5

Click Format..

4) Check it's all OK by going to Disk > Management and it should show as UFS formatted and online.

5) Once it's formatted, you need to mount it.
Disks > Mount Point
Click the blue plus icon
Choose your disk
Partition type: GPT Partition
Click Add
Apply Changes

6) Now that it's mounted you need to share it.
Services > CIFS/SMS (Windows shares).
Click the Shares tab
Click the blue plus icon
Fill out information
Add
Apply changes

You can now access the share via SMB just browse to your nas eg. \\nas

Note: UFS is the NATIVE file format for FreeBSD (the underlying OS of FreeNAS). Attempting to use other file formats such as FAT, FAT32, EXT2, EXT3, or NTFS can result in unpredictable results, file corruption, and loss of data!
