Free Anti-virus programs

What is an Anti-virus program?

An Anti-virus program is used to prevent, detect, and remove malware, including computer viruses, worms, and trojan horses. Such programs may also prevent and remove adware, spyware, and other forms of malware. Computer viruses are software programs that are deliberately designed to interfere with a computer's operation, record, corrupt, or delete data. They can even spread themselves to other computers throughout the Internet.

Avira AntiVir Personal

Avast! Free Anti-virus

Microsoft Security Essentials

Anti-malware programs

What is an Anti-malware program?

Anti-malware programs can be used for detection and removal of malware software that has been installed onto a computer. Malware, short for malicious software, is software that's designed to infiltrate a computer system without the owner's informed consent.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Spybot - Search & Destroy

A-squared

Super anti-spyware

Hitman Pro

Firewalls

What is a Firewall?

A firewall is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting authorized communications. It is configured to permit or deny computer applications based upon a set of rules and other criteria.

Comodo Internet Security

Comodo Firewall

ZoneAlarm

Online Armor

Outpost

On demand scanners / bootable CDs

Dr.Web CureIt!

Other software

Hijack This

HijackThis is a useful program for Malware analysis and removal.

Threatfire

Threatfire works off of threat detection as opposed to running off of a virus database. It guards against executables hooking onto .dll files and protects system files from being modified. It should only be installed on a machine that is CLEAN from any sorts of Virus / Malware. It is designed for prevention and not removal.

GMER - Rootkit Detector and Remover

GMER is an application that detects and removes rootkits. It scans for: hidden processes, hidden threads, hidden modules, hidden services, hidden files, hidden disk sectors (MBR), hidden Alternate Data Streams, hidden registry keys, drivers hooking SSDT, drivers hooking IDT, drivers hooking IRP calls and inline hooks. GMER runs on Windows NT/W2K/XP/VISTA/7

Actually the complete pc tools package is not 98% effective. Not even close. It is actually closer to 80. Malwarebytes is not at all effective against ring(0) rootkits and the only ring(3) rootkit it can remove is TDSS variants. TDSS is a simplistic rootkit that comes packaged with mostly rogue a/v software.
