NO NO NO NO NO.
Magic wand only works if the background and render colour are vastly different, most of the time it's a lot quicker and more accurate to render using the pen tool or (on the rare occasions) the marquee tool. This, for example, would be a LOT quicker on pen tool As you do...

I bet that image didn't render properly, because of the shadow.

On Photoshop you can use the Magic Erase.
> Set Tolerance to 50 > Click and it will usually do it. If it doesn't get rid of everything, zoom in to 500% with the eraser tool at 1 pixel and get rid of the stray dots.
