After research, it would seem that the Netgear WG311v3 is using a totally different chipset than the v1 and v2.

The Netgear WG311 comes in four different versions – WG311v1, Wg311v2, WG311v3, and WG311T. v1 and T are both Atheros chipsets and are compatible out of the box. v2 is Texas Instruments chipset. v3 is Marvel chipset and not supported.

I've not seen it on Backtrack's compatibility list either so i'd say no, it's not compatible sorry pal.

The Alfa AWUS036H is very good, i have it personally. It also allows you to add a larger external antenna.

Note: If you choose this option, please be careful there is the AWUS036H which is compatible then the AWUS036HN which isn't! They both look the same so look at the model number carefully. Mine cost me around £35.
