Sharn's quest for a good job (Cont. more) - bigsharn - 23-07-2010 Ok, so as some of you are aware I managed to get a job in promotions for a tour bus company (Take THAT York Citysightseeing) As it is, I'm having my hours cut left right and centre (I'm meant to be on 9:30-3, I'm lucky if I stay on past 2pm) and I'm on a grand total of £4.82/hour Anyway, I'm still looking for something a bit more permanent and today after giving Leeds Gumtree a go (as well as the channels I usually try), managed to get 3 phone calls back (usually I get one from the same recruitment company telling me I'm not experienced enough and to apply for CPP... AGAIN), One was from a door canvassing thing without guaranteed hours (no good, I may as well stick with my current job) The other two however were a bit better, I have an interview on Friday August 6th for a marketing company () and another from a careers company which involves cold calling and going to a training session while I'm at Pullman (which I can't really do since I've taken a week off for Sonisphere) Anyway, so by looking 20 miles up the road, I've managed to get an interview, a training session and a phone call ...I realise I'm turning this articles section into more of a blog, but bugger it, at least it interests some of you :p RE: Sharn's quest for a good job (Cont. more) - Pack3t SynAck3r - 23-07-2010 These are supposed to be articles? lol More like chronicles of a man in a never ending search to pay his debts. It is entertaining none the less. Like I have said before, best of luck. Me thinks you need a portfolio of your art showing your "creative genius." I know right now you take what you get, but doing what you love is so much less like work. Take it from a man who has been down that road. RE: Sharn's quest for a good job (Cont. more) - bigsharn - 24-07-2010 I would love to and believe me I've applied for every job I can in artistry and graphics, but because I'm not educated to degree level I have no chance of that (though you'd have thought two years' studio and two years' non-studio experience would be enough to be considered) :p RE: Sharn's quest for a good job (Cont. more) - Pack3t SynAck3r - 24-07-2010 Ahh poop on that, degrees in graphics/design are for suckers. All you need is a portfolio. If you are any good you can get a job. What is it you can do? i.e. animation web design, comic books, whatever..... I have a wide variety of "tech" companies that are always looking for talent. Some of them have employees all over the world. Mass media, advertising, porn, manufacturing, telecom..etc I have done consulting work for just about every industry you can think of so I have quite a few people that I could drop your work into their lap. I can plainly see you are struggling and I am merely trying to lend you a hand. Perhaps it is different in the UK compared to the states. Here as long as you are confident, you know your shit and can sell yourself, and you have a little bit of hustler in you, success will come. RE: Sharn's quest for a good job (Cont. more) - bigsharn - 24-07-2010 Well I have a job telling tourists to get on a tour bus and generally aim for getting at least the equivalent of 5x my wages onto a tour per day (and generally get about that) so confidence and selling myself isn't an issue there, and as I'm sure you're aware I know a hell of a lot about Photoshop and I'm proficient in InDesign (though haven't really practiced on it that much, but I don't tell Employers that) I actually send in everything posted in my digital artistry thread as well as one live project I did a leaflet for.... Advertising is basically what I specialise in, but as well as that I'm giong to start selling prints soon when I have the money to invest into it RE: Sharn's quest for a good job (Cont. more) - Pack3t SynAck3r - 25-07-2010 I think something must be wrong with that site because it looks like it tries to download your pics but it times out pretty much every time. I think one time in ten that I tried it loaded up one of your pics. If you have been using that site on your resume as a point of reference it might explain why nobody is giving you any calls. Perhaps upload to a different site, that one isn't doing you any favors. Hell use facebook if nothing else. RE: Sharn's quest for a good job (Cont. more) - bigsharn - 25-07-2010 Photobucket it is then XD RE: Sharn's quest for a good job (Cont. more) - Mark - 25-07-2010 Good luck in getting a half decent job, believe it or not i have a qualification in "Graphics" but when i studied it it was boring as hell in school. Also, the links are down for me as well. |
