Magic wand only works if the background and render colour are vastly different, most of the time it's a lot quicker and more accurate to render using the pen tool or (on the rare occasions) the marquee tool. If it doesn't get rid of everything, zoom in to 500% with the eraser tool at 1 pixel and get rid of the stray dots.
